Sebastian? Julia? God? Who does Charles Ryder really love?
Towards the end of World War II, Captain Charles Ryder finds himself billeted in the grounds of a stately English home. Recognising it, his memory immediately transports him back to the 1920s, and his association with the doomed Catholic aristocrats that lived there. Charles relives his Oxford infatuation with Lord Sebastian Flyte, the glamorous but damaged son of the family, his visits to the great house, his idolisation of the family, and his subsequent love for Sebastian's sister, Julia.
Charles' initial disdain for the family's belief system is challenged, as he finds himself being unwillingly drawn towards it.
Evelyn Waugh was one of England's most brilliant satirical novelists. Brideshead Revisited is the most nostalgic and reflective of all his novels, and based on Waugh's own experiences at Oxford, and with an aristocratic Catholic family.
Made famous by the classic 1983 Granada television serial, this much-loved work – with its poetic first-person narrative by Charles Ryder – lends itself perfectly to the stage.
