Was Mozart murdered by his arch-rival Salieri?

Viennese court composer, Antonio Salieri is entranced when he first hears the music of Mozart, and immediately appalled that such beauty can emanate from "the voice of an obscene child".

Having devoted his life to God, Salieri disowns Him for breathing genius into so unworthy a vessel.

Peter Shaffer's famous play weaves this confrontation between mediocrity and genius into a tale of breathtaking dramatic power.

In the recent tradition of The One Day of the Year and Suddenly, Last Summer, Independent Theatre is delighted to present, as this year's staged play-reading, Shaffer's landmark work.

Excitingly, it is being presented in South Australia's stunning new performing arts venue – UKARIA Cultural Centre.  Nestled in an exquisite valley in Mount Barker, this state-of-the art concert hall offers a unique setting for this music-inspired play, and will give you an opportunity to experience this new jewel in South Australia's performing arts crown.
